Study on the action of a nutritional supplement that focuses on joint pain produced by osteoarthritis or joint aging in a population who regularly performs low-intensity exercise.
The sociomedical implications were analyzed in a population aged over 65.
In order to evaluate the possible benefit of the nutritional supplement in this aged population, a naturally occurring hydrolyzed collagen compound enriched with magnesium and vitamin B complex, which acts on joint pain and helps play sports, was administered to 20 volunteers for 16 weeks.
The results of this study showed that test compound, which was well accepted and safe, improved the subjective and objective response to mobility and pain relief in 84.2% of subjects.
More specifically, the results obtained, show the action of test compound inducing a gradual and statistically significant decrease in the number of patients with strong and moderate pain, which became slight along the study duration.
Rigidity on starting movement decreased considerably in moderate or severe rigidity groups in respect to assessment at baseline. Groups show a significant amelioration of symptoms at week 4, 8, 12 and 16. At week 4 clinical improvement was already observed in 36.8% of patients and then reached up to 84.2% at week 16.
All the patients reported that the performance of their sports / recreational activity was much easier, especially because of a decrease of joint rigidity and mobility pain.
No side-effects were observed to the patients during or after the study.

Study on the effect of a nutritional supplement with gelatin hydrolysates that focuses on the prevention of sport injury.
The action of the nutritional supplement containing gelatine hydrolysate was assessed on articular cartilage thickness in sportsmen and sportswomen.
The administration of a daily dose of gelatine hydrolysate (10 g) enriched with vitamin B complex and magnesium for 6 months significantly increased the articular cartilage thickness of scapulohumeral joint and femorotibial joint. A 14% average increase was observed in treated patients.
In the control group, after the 6-month length of the study, not only there was any increase in articular cartilage thickness 16% but also a significant 13% decrease of cartilage biometrical values.
These results indicated that the long-term dosing of a gelatine hydrolysate enriched with vitamin B complex and magnesium to sportsmen and sportswomen may be useful in the prevention of joint injury.
More specifically, M. Adam (1991) reported that the oral administration of gelatine preparations improved the symptoms in 52 patients suffering from joint degeneration of hip and knee, while, Trentham et al (1993) observed a decrease in the number of painful joints in 60 patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis after oral administration of Type II collagen for three months. Additionally, Arquer and Pujol (1996) reported that in 20 patients, whose physical activity was limited to pain on movement, the administration for 16 weeks of a dietary supplementation containing highly purified gelatine hydrolysates produced a gradual and statistically significant decrease in the number of patients with strong and moderate pain together with reduction of rigidity on starting movement.
